The original social networking sites started to help us make friends.

But that never happens.

When it does, it means the user went against all principles of the site.

Consider this.

You are far more likely to make a friend playing an online game, using a service that was never originally designed for interacting socially, and has poor tools for doing so.

Online gaming through a gatekeeper service like steam or epic is about having easy access to all your games in one account. Through that gate and within the gatekeeper’s walled garden, the ability to play online with other users is a feature some games have and some do not. The gatekeeper doesn’t decide; the game makers do.

Then the ability to chat and voice chat with others is an additional non-vital feature that only specific games have. It requires significant additional programming to add-on.

Games are often solitary experiences, and designed that way.

A social networking service’s main goal and purpose is to allow its users to interact with other users all over the globe, creating a communal experience.

But it became weird.

They say there is a limit to how many friends you can have before it becomes too difficult to keep up.

They say social networking sites mirror the hierarchies and power structures of the physical world.

What do you say? What do you feel?

Discuss with friends.
